Leeds: Jobs saved as troubled bakers sold

MOST of the 285 jobs under threat at administration-hit Leeds bakers Ainsleys have been safeguarded after the business was broken up and sold.

Buyers have now been found for the majority of the company which was founded in the city more than 70 years ago.

As part of the deal, brokered by Grant Thornton, Leeds-based Countrystyle Foods has bought Ainsleys bakery business, based at Sheepscar, and its respected brand name.

Of the company's 29 leasehold retail outlets across West Yorkshire, 20 have been sold, split between Cooplands of Scarborough and Cooplands of Doncaster.

In addition the firm's successful sandwich van business has been sold to A W Food Services Limited.

Joe McLean, partner at Grant Thornton's Leeds office, has been leading the search for a buyer for Ainsleys since the firm went into administration on November 6.

He said: "We are really pleased to have found buyers for the majority of the various businesses within the Ainsleys portfolio."
