Leeds group bids for £7.5m heating cash
A LEEDS not-for-profit group is hoping to win £7.5m from Europe to help low-income Yorkshire households heat their homes.
Community Energy Solutions (CES), based in The Calls in central Leeds, works in deprived communities to upgrade the heating and insulation of homes and install cleaner, greener and cheaper systems.
It has applied for a grant from the Yorkshire and Humber European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and has got through the first stages of the process.
If successful it plans to target thousands of homes in the region for improvement.
Lee Cattermole, operations director for CES, said: "We are under no illusions that we still have much work to do before the funding is finally approved, but just to get through the first phase of the application is great news.
"I would like to say a big thank-you for all the support we have received from our partners that have come together to help make this happen.
"We now know we are on the right tracks and we are working closely with Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme to make sure we complete each stage of the process. The new funding will have a huge impact for many households across the region who still suffer the blight of fuel poverty."
CES is funded by the Government's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward.
It brings together technical and financial expertise to update fuel systems on a community-wide scale.
In many cases the group can fund gas mains extensions to communities who do not have them, or introduce other modern renewable energy alternatives.
In the last two years CES has helped housing associations and local authorities with thousands of new gas connections and major heat pump projects.
