Two volunteers from the Leeds Jewish Committee of Yorkshire Cancer Research are celebrating 40 years of fundraising.

Friends Hilary Tammer and Mavis Clayman started helping the regional charity in the 1970s when they were in their twenties and knew people suffering from cancer.

Hilary, 64, said: “Having both been born and brought up in Yorkshire, raising money for Yorkshire Cancer Research greatly appealed to us.

“Being a member of the Leeds Jewish Committee has become a way of life and we have developed many long-standing friendships as a result of our involvement.

“Every member is extremely dedicated and committed to the cause, and we all have one thing in common – the desire to raise funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research and the work they do throughout the region.”

Hilary was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2001 but was given the ‘all clear’ last year. She said: “I try to give encouragement to people who have been diagnosed with cancer by telling them my story.”

The pair have organised several charity events over the years, ranging from bridge suppers and bingo evenings to murder mystery and rock and roll nights.

In 1988 the committee introduced the Jewish Woman of the Year Awards, celebrating inspirational women throughout the region.

Another highlight was a coffee morning attended by former England test cricketer Sir Ian Botham in the 1980s.

The committee now holds ‘Non-Coffee Mornings’, which involve asking for donations in lieu of attending a coffee morning.

Mavis, 69, said: “This novel way of raising funds has generated more than £1,000 each time.”

The committee celebrated raising £700,000 at its 50th anniversary in 2008.

Current statistics show 259 people die every week from cancer in Yorkshire.
