A huge crowd of 10,000 watched last year's event which took place on a hot bank holiday.

"We are delighted to receive such an excellent response," said Caroline. "The challenge promises some spectacular racing and a fantastic day out."

Teams will need up to 10 paddlers plus a drummer and they will crew a 30ft-long boat over a 200m course. There is a special prize for fancy dress.

Wates Construction, who finished third last year, have entered again and are expected to have a Baywatch-theme costume. "Watch out for the Hoff and Pammy," said spokesman David Price. "We all enjoyed the event last year, dressing up as Oompa Loompas in green wigs and orange faces."

Caroline Roberts said dragon boat racing was a good way to motivate staff and encourage bonding.

"Technique, timing and above all teamwork win the day rather than physical prowess," she said. "No previous experience is required and everyone starts in the same boat, so to speak!"
