Leeds dad's traffic danger warning
A DAD whose five-year-old son was hit by a car outside his school has warned "it is only matter of time before a child is killed."
Paul Murray-Hind was holding Spike's hand as they walked to school when a private-hire taxi ran into the youngster, clipping and cutting his elbow, outside Raynville Primary School, Bramley, Leeds.
The next day the father-of-four said he, Spike and his four-year-old son JJ were all nearly crushed by a reversing vehicle when they tried to cross the road between cars parked on double yellow lines.
Mr Murray-Hind, who lives on nearby Aston Terrace, said: "It's about time someone did something about it.
"One day a child will be hit and killed." He added: "I was incredibly angry.
"There were cars parked all the way – bumper to bumper.
"There was a gap of about eight or nine inches – enough to squeeze through. Then this reversing light came on.
"I grabbed Spike in my arms. If the car had reversed it would have crushed all three of us."
He said the driver admitted he had not seen them.Mr Murray-Hind, 43, said Spike had special needs so did not fully understand the danger.
Headteacher Su Edwards said it was "a continuous effort to try and encourage people to park responsibly" and she regularly sent letters asking parents to do that.
A spokeswoman for Leeds City Council said parking attendants would include the school on their patrols from now on.
