Leeds crash-drink driver attacked police
A DRUNK driver who fled after crashing into a police car attacked and injured officers as they arrested him.
Maharbaan Misri tried to strangle one of the policeman and broke another officer's finger during a violent struggle in Beeston, Leeds.
Leeds Crown Court heard Misri, 30, crashed his Citroen Xsara into a parked car owned by William Cooper on Grovehall Road.
He drove off but returned to pick up debris and sped away as Mr Cooper noted his registration and called police.
Police spotted Misri's car parked on Berkeley Road and an officer tapped on his window.
Prosecutor, Michael Collins said Misri reversed into the front of the police car before speeding away along Dewsbury Road.
During a chase, Misri mounted the pavement, ignored red lights and drove on a central traffic island and hit a bollard.
At one point he lost control and crashed into a wall, but reversed and then carried on driving.
He eventually abandoned his car on his own street – Atha Street, Beeston – and ran into a garden at around 1am last December 10.
As the two police officers involved in the chase tried to arrest him, Misri grabbed one by the throat causing neck injuries.
He struggled with the second officer, who suffered a fractured right index finger.
Misri threatened to kill the officers while he was being taken to Bridewell Police Station. He refused to take a breath test.
Allan Armbrister for Misri said he was a married man with a wife due to give birth in November.
Mr Armbrister said Misri was 'infatuated' with cars.
Recorder Andrew Kershaw jailed Misri for 12 months and banned him from driving for three years.
Misri had admitted dangerous driving, affray, failing to provide a breath specimen, driving without insurance and failing to report an accident.
