Leeds child porn man back in jail

A man who trawled the internet for pornographic pictures of boys soon after being released from prison for the same offences has been returned to jail for three years.

Jonathan Epton, 46, was described as “a very dangerous man” who has spent the past ten years downloading indecent images of children.

Epton was working as a senior sales manager for a car parts company when he was arrested for his latest offences in April 2010.

Officers seized his work laptop when they executed a search warrant at his home and found 2,078 illegal images. A total of 213 images were at level four and ten were at level five - the most serious kind.

After his arrest Epton said he had downloaded the images from the internet or had been sent them from other people he had been speaking to through internet chat rooms.

Leeds Crown Court heard Epton was given an extended prison sentence in 2003 for similar offences. He also received a conviction in 1994 for lewd and indecent behaviour with two boys aged 11 and 13. Epton, of Cross Flatts Place, Beeston, pleaded guilty to 21 charges in relation to possession of indecent images of children.

Freddie Apfel, mitigating, said Epton had an “extremely good job” as a senior sales manger when he was arrested and immediately quit the role to save the company embarrassment. He said Epton pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and around 70 per cent of the images were at the lowest level.

Jailing him, judge Geoffrey Marson described Epton’s case as “troubling”. He said: “You have a long standing sexual interest in children. You have previously completed a sex offender treatment programme which appears to have done nothing to reduce your offending.” After the case, Det Con John Higgins said: “For a period of ten years Mr Epton has trawled the most disturbing images of children being abused. He is a very dangerous man and this sentence reflects the serious nature of the offences,”
