Leeds cemetery 'rapist' is hunted by police

DETECTIVES investigation an alleged rape in a Leeds cemetery today issued a description of a man they wish to find.

Beckett Street Cemetery in Burmantofts, Leeds, was sealed off on Sunday afternoon after a woman in her 30s reported the attack there earlier that day.

The rape is alleged to have taken place sometime between noon and 3pm and police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Today police are hunting an African Caribbean, 30-40 years old, 5ft 6in tall and with black hair in short dreadlocks. He was wearing a beige top, black jeans and black trainers. Anyone with information can ring North East Leeds Police on 0845 6060606.

Beckett Street Cemetery in Harehills is a significant historic landmark in the city and nationally. It was one of the earliest public funded cemeteries in England when it opened in 1845 and houses some of Leeds's founding fathers. It was founded by Act of Parliament obtained by the city council in 1842.
