Leeds boy is behind new children’s charity

A thoughtful 10-year-old’s idea for helpful wrapping paper has developed into a new children’s charity in Leeds.
Avi Glyn, from Alwoodley, wanted to put waste paper to good use – and so Kids2Kids was born.
Now, he and his mum Judith Fiddler are gearing up for their first major fundraising event to support a Leeds Children’s Hospital ward.
The youngster came up with the idea for a charity last year.
“It was my birthday and my mum was throwing wrapping paper in the bin,” Avi, a pupil of the Leeds Menorah School on Street Lane in Roundhay, said.
“I said it was like throwing money away. I said ‘why don’t we start a charity and we can put the money to good use’. I wanted to help kids less fortunate than me.”
Avi and his mum set up the charity and developed Happy-Rap.
The schoolboy helped design sheets of wrapping paper which include games inspired by the Where’s Wally? books. He, along with volunteers from sponsors Leeds Metropolitan University, spent hours packing the paper.
Christmas packs raised £1,000 and businesses throughout the city continue to sell the £2 Happy-Rap packs, with all proceeds to the charity.
The glitzy Kids2Kids Purple Ball will be held on March 31 at Weetwood Hall Hotel, Headingley, Leeds, and will feature an appearance from Edna’s Hat, a band made up of stars from Avi’s favourite soap Emmerdale.
Proceeds from the fundraising will go towards buying games and DVDs for patients on the children’s kidney dialysis ward at Leeds General Infirmary.
Judith said: “I am amazed by Avi. I have been in business for 10 years and some of his ideas, me and my staff would not have thought of.
“He is a very caring child.”
