Leeds artist to showcase graffiti art at the O2 Arena
Hannah Limbachia.
Daubing graffiti on the walls of the capital would usually be guaranteed to land you in trouble.
But Leeds artist Hannah Limbachia had nothing to worry about – she’d been asked to make her mark at London’s iconic O2 arena.
The 21-year-old, of Moortown, was one of 18 artists given the chance to express themselves in an exhibition to showcase young talent.
She said: “It was a one-off experience and was really good fun. I got a lot of inspiration from the other artists. Hopefully it will lead to more projects.”
A former Carr Manor High School pupil and Leeds College of Art and Design student, Hannah now works as a hospitality assisant at St Gemma’s Hospice in Moortown.
But she produces illustrations, surface patterns and photography in her spare time.
The O2 exhibition, which runs for three months, was organised by somewhereto, a nationwide project to help young people find the space to express themselves, and professional graffiti artists The Graffiti Life Company.
A spokeswoman for somewhereto said: “Young artists often struggle to find places to display their art, some even painting illegally so that they have the opportunity to express themselves, so this exhibition offers them an amazing opportunity to get their art on display, legally and in a location where it will be seen by hundreds of thousands of people over the next few months.”
Hannah, who hosted her first exhibition at Leeds Corn Exchange last year, had to produce a 6m mural on a theme of her choosing.
She used large marker pens to create a work based around peace and freedom in a London warehouse before its display outside the O2.
“I get my inspiration from urban and street art and music,” she said.
“It’s really colourful – simple, but effective.
“There’s a lot of war going on around the world and I wanted to do something to challenge that.”
