Leeds Architecture Awards 2009: Judgement day for landmarks
A panel of the UK's top architects have been touring some of Leeds's finest buildings to find winners for 2009 Leeds Architecture Awards.
Judges, including Castleford Bridge designer Renato Benedetti and Leeds City Council's civic architect John Thorp, visited some of the city's most popular landmarks as part of the final stages of the annual competition.
Buildings shortlisted for awards and toured by the judges include: The Mansion at Roundhay Park; Pudsey Grangefield School; St Margaret's Church Hall in Horsforth; Carnegie Village in Headingley and Old Broadcasting House on Woodhouse Lane.
The Leeds Architecture Awards aim to recognise innovative and sustainable architecture, conservation and landscape in Leeds, as well as increasing awareness and interest in the design of buildings and their surroundings.
John Thorp said: "Every year, we're trying to assess the progress of the evolution of the city through the latest range of projects.
"The thing I particularly like about working with the city is the diversity of materials and the settings, all the way from the heart of the city centre out to the towns and villages in the more rural contexts, and trying to get quality into the built environment."
This year's awards include a brand new category called Temporary Works, which recognises the temporary use of vacant spaces, such as Green in the City at Wellington Place and Wonderwood at Holbeck Urban Village.
The other categories are: New Building, Altered Building, Conserved Building and Public Realm and Landscape Design.
Most the shortlisted projects were completed between January 1, 2007 and the closing date for nominations last month.
The awards are jointly promoted by Leeds City Council and the Leeds Chamber Property Forum, in association with the Leeds Society of Architects, the Landscape Institute, the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and Leeds Civic Trust.
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony in Leeds in January 2010.
Guest assessor and architect Renato Benedetti said: "It's always fun being a judge and I try to approach it in a positive way.
"Leeds has got such a lovely, dense, urban city centre, which is very walkable and a lot of the streets are very elegant."
* Next month the YEP will be publishing details of our new competition to find Leeds's favourite building – and tomorrow we will be taking a closer look at some of this year's nominated schemes.
