a YOUTH club in south Leeds is streets ahead after receiving a donation of a brand new minibus.

The Hunslet Club, which provides a range of activities for young people in the south Leeds area, was given the new bus by LV insurance.

The company asked its 200 members of staff from the Leeds office to nominate and then vote for a local charity to receive the minibus donation.

The club on Hillidge Road was nominated by a member of staff who had used the club as a child, and it went on to win the most votes.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Craig Gilmore, sport development manager at the Hunslet Club, said: “It just opens up a lot more opportunities. It will mean that we can transport kids to sporting events and go on trips and excursions.

“We do all sorts here – we’ve got massive football, rugby, boxing and dancing sections.

“We have probably got about 1,500 active members and are pretty much a seven days a week operation.

“It’s quite a thriving little community club and fundraisers and boosts like this really help.”

Mr Gilmore added: “It is probably not the most affluent area but having a minibus will help get the kids around here get more involved.

“It will help take them on outings from theatre trips to football matches.”

Activities at the Hunslet Club include football, performing arts, musical theatre, rugby and boxing.

John O’Roarke, who works as managing director of LV, visited the Hunslet Club yesterday to present the minibus to Dennis Robbins, chief executive of the club.

Mr O’Roarke said: “For LV, it is a pleasure to be able to support The Hunslet Club.

“This is a massively impressive establishment which is run with a professional quality.”

Mr O’Roarke added: “It is a great inspiration knowing we’re helping over 2,000 young people.”
