Leeds: You could be heroes - just for one day thanks to Jane T

Jane Tomlinson’s determination to raise a staggering £1.85m for charity despite battling cancer made her a hero for many.

Now Yorkshire Evening Post readers have the chance to nominate their own hero who is helping carry on her legacy today.

New awards will honour the volunteers, fundraisers, runners, walkers and swimmers who continue to help raise money in her name.

Despite her death in 2007 her charity work continues through For All Events which organises the 10k Run For All in Leeds, Swim for All and Walk for All in the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District.

The YEP is sponsoring Fundraiser of the Year and readers have been invited to nominate deserving individuals.

Adults, young people and children shortlisted will be invited to a ceremony at Asda House in Leeds where the winners will be unveiled and presented with their awards.

Among the inspirational stories the YEP covered this year is that of disabled schoolboy James Driver. The eight-year-old, from Rothwell, who has cerebral palsy, struggled to walk more than a few metres at a time – even with support – but used his walking frame to complete the whole course in the 1.5km Jane Tomlinson Junior and Mini Run for All in Leeds.

His goal was to raise an impressive £40,000 for an operation that could help him walk unaided for the first time. In November he had the pioneering surgery and it has already made a difference.

Mike Tomlinson, Jane’s husband, said: “Our fundraisers, our volunteers and all those people who come and take part or support us in any way are what make For All Events what it is today.

“Many of our supporters have been there from the start – we think it is time to recognise their achievements and thank them for their hard work and dedication.”

Nominations are open now and close on January 30.

The shortlist will be announced shortly afterwards.

To nominate someone, go to: www.forallevents.co.uk and click on the For All Events Awards 2012 logo.

Awards will be presented in five other categories.

These are:

1. The Volunteer Award; 2. Most Inspirational Moment of 2012; 3. Colleague of the Season; 4. Performance of the Year; 5. The Jane Tomlinson Appeal Award.
