Volunteers got their hands dirty as they added some extra greenery to Killingbeck Fields in Leeds.

Dozens of saplings donated by the Woodland Trust conservation charity were planted in the meadow during a busy day of community activity.

The work was organised by the Wyke Beck Valley Pride project in conjunction with the newly-formed Friends of Killingbeck Fields group.

Wyke Beck Valley Pride co-ordinator John Kilner said: “We lost more than 97 per cent of our wildflower meadows in the last century.

“It’s fantastic that local people are coming together to protect these areas for us all to enjoy.”

Wyke Beck Valley Pride is a Leeds City Council-backed scheme that aims to make environmental improvements to a ‘green corridor’ running from Roundhay Park down to Rothwell Country Park.
