Leeds United snaps to hit the Big Apple

LEEDS United fans exiled in New York can get their kicks next month at a football photography exhibition.

The exhibition features pictures taken by United supporters who were part of the ‘casual’ youth movement of the 1980s.

First held in Leeds last month, it won rave reviews for successfully capturing the casual scene’s twin obsessions of football and fashion.

And the man behind the exhibition is confident it will garner further acclaim when it goes Stateside with a week-long run at the Powerhouse Arena gallery in an arts quarter of Brooklyn, starting on April 7.

Richard Cusworth, a 39-year-old IT worker from Horsforth, said: “A couple of guys I know who live in New York and New Jersey were saying they’d love to see it over there. My work takes me to New York quite a bit so I basically said ‘it’s no big deal, I’ll bring the photos over when I’m across next’.

“There’s the football, there’s the fashion and it’s a little bit edgy - it’s a part of British culture a lot of them will never have encountered before.”

Plans are also being put in place to take the exhibition – called Wish You Were Here... – on the road to Paris later this year.

Its debut airing came in the more down-to-earth surroundings of Holbeck’s Temple Works arts space on February 19. It attracted more than 1,000 visitors, with collections raising £800 for children’s cancer charity Candlelighters.

Key images in the exhibition include a shot of riot police lined up on the field at United’s trouble-hit fixture at Birmingham City on the final day of the 1984-85 season.
