Leeds United: Park ride plan for Elland Road car parks

PARK AND RIDE: Land used for parking at Elland Road.

PARK AND RIDE: Land used for parking at Elland Road.

Congestion-busting plans are being drawn up for a park and ride scheme involving land next to Leeds United’s Elland Road ground.

West Yorkshire passenger transport authority Metro is considering using city council-owned car parks at Elland Road for the scheme.

Buses could run between the ground and Leeds city centre as often as every 10 minutes, according to a Metro report.

It is hoped the scheme would reduce the number of cars travelling into the middle of the city, easing the pressure on Leeds’s beleaguered road system.

The report says: “Metro and Leeds City Council are developing proposals for a park and ride scheme at Elland Road, using the council-owned car parks adjacent to the football stadium.

“The scheme details are yet to be developed, including the number of car parking spaces, but it is expected that a 10-minute frequency, dedicated bus service would be provided to Leeds city centre. Analysis shows that the service could be run commercially.”

The report also says a planning application for the project could be submitted later this year.

Details still to be confirmed include whether operation of the scheme would be confined to non-matchdays only.

At present, Leeds’s main park and ride site is at King Lane in Alwoodley. Opened in 1998, it has space for more than 150 cars and is linked to the city centre by the Scott Hall Road guided bus route.

News of the Elland Road proposals comes as planning work continues for the development of another patch of land used for matchday parking at the ground.

The Yorkshire Evening Post told last week how construction of a new police headquarters is due to start this summer on the site of the old Elland Road greyhound stadium.

Outline proposals for the base include two main buildings, one four storeys high and the other three.

I agree with malcolm17, it is about time leeds had a good park and ride. I deffinatley agree that a rail station at the venue would support the ground and increase revenue for rail services with fans attending matches helping reduce traffic on elland road and to the M62M1. Just imagine if this is a success they could even consider building multi-story car park and ride there! Links to the city by train, NGT (if it ever happens) or Good quality buses driven by intelligent, considerate, smooth driving drivers.

This is good news but why not go one step further and build a railway station adjacent to these car parks, which would also benifit leeds united and serve as another means of reducing road traffic into the centre of leeds.and for the future if a train-tram system could be developed to use exsiting track as is being used in germany and austria this could be used for all rail -routes into leeds reducing even further road conjestion.

this is excellent news but long overdue, a city the size of Leeds should have plenty of P+R provision, but wymetro wasted all the funds on the failed supertram... due to congestion and poor junction design the bus times into Leeds from South Leeds are very slow, this site will need a fast bus corridor into the City Centre or it'll not be worthwhile.
