Leeds United: Details revealed of bid for Elland Road Revie statue

Fresh details were revealed today about the push to raise funds for a statue of legendary Leeds United boss Don Revie.

Initial plans were announced in May for the 7ft-tall bronze tribute to Revie's glorious achievements at Leeds during the 1960s and 1970s.

Now the man leading the project has set out how he intends to raise the 90,000 needed for the statue.

Long-time Revie admirer Jim Cadman's proposals include:

* The launch of The 1972 Club, named in honour of that year's FA Cup win by United. Members will pay 250 for a range of exclusive offers and gifts, including a limited edition cold cast porcelain model of the statue;

* The publication this November of a one-off, 64-page magazine about Revie, packed with rare photos and match reports plus messages from his former players;

* A glittering gala dinner in autumn 2011 at United's Elland Road

ground, where guests will include several members of the all-conquering Leeds side assembled by 'The Don';

* An opportunity for companies to pay 1,500 to sponsor one of 10 plaques on the stone base of the statue.

Mr Cadman today also said the site for the tribute would be at Elland Road, rather than, as previously thought, Leeds city centre.

It is hoped the sculpture will be ready for unveiling in May 2012, the 40th anniversary of United's 1972 FA Cup triumph.

Mr Cadman told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "We're making good headway but we obviously want to get as much support as we can.

"Hopefully people will rally behind us, in recognition of Don's enormous contribution to the club and the city as a whole."

Barnsley-based artist Graham Ibbeson has been commissioned to create the statue.

He and Mr Cadman have previously worked together on sculptures of Yorkshire cricketing great Fred Trueman and Lancastrian comedian Les Dawson.
