Leeds United: Axed Mick McCarthy sees odds tumble on Whites job UPDATED

The odds on Mick McCarthy being installed as the next manager of Leeds United dramatically shortened yesterday following his sacking by Wolves.

Barnsley-born McCarthy – a boyhood United fan – received his marching orders in the wake of Wanderers’ humiliating 5-1 home defeat to West Brom in Sunday’s Black Country derby and he is now being touted as a firm contender in the race to become the next boss at Elland Road.

The 53-year-old, pictured, something of a Championship promotion specialist, is rated as 5-1 joint second-favourite along with Steve Bruce by bookmakers with early frontrunner Neil Warnock rated as 11-2.

Still favourite is caretaker boss Neil Redfearn (4-1).

Meanwhile, Huddersfield Town chief Lee Clark has again distanced himself from talk linking him with the United job, with his odds having drifted out to 16-1.

McCarthy has second-tier promotion form with both Sunderland and Wolves, helping the Black Cats to the Championship title with a bumper 94 points in 2004-05 after taking the Stadium of Light outfit to the play-off semi-finals in his first full season at the club in 2003-04.

After being appointed boss at Molineux in the summer of 2006, ex-Republic of Ireland chief McCarthy helped Wanderers earn a place in the play-offs at the end of his first full season in charge when they lost to arch-rivals West Brom.

The following campaign, Wolves were pipped for the final play-off place by Watford, only for the Yorkshireman to inspire the Midlanders to the title in 2008-09 when they finished seven points clear of Birmingham City.

Vastly-experienced McCarthy also took the first club he managed, Millwall, to the play-offs back in 1993-94.

Wolves confirmed that McCarthy’s number two, ex-Leeds United striker Terry Connor, will take charge of training until a new boss is appointed.

As anyone considered that the cancerous old twt that is KB IS ACTUALLY TRYING TO SYSTEMATICALLY DESTROY our club. Its certainly starting to look that way because surely not even the most inept, incompetent fool could actually run our club any worse than its being run now.

Ry-back-er-board - what a joker. You obviously enjoyed your xmas mince pies and mulled wine with Bates and the board, I hope you get diarrhea from your LUFC hot cross buns and chocolate eggs at Easter.

gpatton - "And before you jump in and say the crowds are down because of Bates, you're wrong. They are down because of the rubbish served up by grayson." I seem to remember some pretty big crowds in L1 when were promoted. Last year the average was still very high, in fact I think it was the highest in the league, at 27,299. The crowds have plummeted this year because Bates sold in the summer, when we should have been tying players down and strengthening, he has just done the same in January by selling our captain and sacking the manager. All this while putting prices up. The squad has been made weaker, the football has become worse, and Bates answer to this, put the prices up again, blame the outgoing manager or better still blame the fans.

To the people who want Bates out, why not stop attending matches and buying Leeds United products? Then he might want to leave if he feels his position is untenable. That is the only way to change things, but most of the anti-Bates brigade are stupid to think of it. And before you jump in and say the crowds are down because of Bates, you're wrong. They are down because of the rubbish served up by grayson.

Thanks to the efforts of the very astute Mr.Bates (& board) we can at least look forward with a great deal of confidence in our progress back towards the PL. As we can see there is no shortage of available candidates ready; available & keen to manage our club to succeed towards this. I remember when DOL was sacked PP announced that we would be taking time to make sure the right manager was found for Leeds....cue Terry Venables!!! Thanks SG for your efforts for the club you support & I'm sure from those applicants for next manager the correct one will be appointed in order to take us up that final step. Regardless if this is this year through a late push or next season. Many more clubs will struggle to meet the losses generated by their extravagance in the transfer & wages expenditure. The financial fair play rules will see mounting challenges and difficulties for certain clubs whereas we are well placed moving forward given our current position and from that that had been inhereted. Mr.Chairman I for one am satisfied with your stewardship @ LUFC & thanks for those festive mince pies & mulled wine at the Xmas carol event.

372 waccoe i AM IN A BIG WAY DISRESPECTING YOU, (not that term these days really means anything). but have you forgotten that it was ken bates that took us where pompey and rangers are now?????? OR HAVE YOU BEEN HAVING A KIP. were you also fast asleep during the absolute disgrace of an administration we went through where we could not get a CVA, and ended up with -15. Now the only reason why your little chum bates regained control was that his mates had loaned him money and would only agree to him taking control even though OTHER PARTIES were willing to pay more in the pound. you might have been having 40 WINKS while this was going on. now since then his selling of our crown jewells, penny pinching etc. has not been for the BENEFIT OF THE CLUB only the benefit of his property development business so he can make some money for his friends behind the scenes. I do hope reading this hasnt sent you into a slumber again because if you want to continue following this club start paying attention because people like you are more of a problem than bates.

In no way disrespecting LUST Leeds Fans, and I agree we need a change from Father Christmes. but if it was not for his money penny pinching over the last few years and selling our crown jewells we would be where Rangers & Pompy are again. It's time to kick Pompy out of the league, never mind give them only 10 point deduction - Any Rotherham, Bournemouth, Luton or Leeds fan would agree 10 points is just not enough. Talk about miss-management. Overpaid players are killing the game and Father Christmas just won't let it happen at Leeds. We have no one wanting to come in and buy the club, if we had it would be a different story, but we dont.

Thirskwhite...What Lust stands for is a decent attempt to try and get our club back, to the Leeds United fans who's stood by their team through thick and thin, not your once in a moon Prawn Cocktailers, it's growing stronger all the time mate, even here in West Australia I suggest you get to the protest march this Afternoon and voice you support.

Why are you wasting your time speculating on the next manager? Redfearn is a shoe- in based on Bates two most important criteria. 1he is cheap 2he is a YES man. End of.
