Leeds traffic light survey to tackle jams COMMENT ON THIS STORY
Fed up waiting at traffic lights? Frustrated by delays? Well here's your chance to tell Leeds City Council what you think.
Council bosses want to hear views on signals, congestion, delays and safety to help them to prioritise traffic signalling systems.
Five years ago when similar public consultation was carried out, 80 per cent of Leeds' residents surveyed thought the traffic lights in the city were excellent, good or satisfactory.
Since then engineers have been working to increase the percentage of junctions that comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, tackle congestion, and install traffic lights that are safe, well designed and efficient.
Now the council is implementing an improved control system for Leeds, which will include new signs for car parks displaying live data, strategies to make it easier to deal with congestion caused by incidents and better traveller information.
Councillor Andrew Carter, executive member with responsibility for city development, said: "The results of the last urban traffic management survey gave us a fair bit of work to do on specific sites.
"We will continue to listen carefully to what the public say, to ensure that improvements are made where residents have highlighted issues."
People can access the questionnaire until September 18 at the www.leedstravel.info website. Or they can phone the urban traffic control team on Leeds 264 0137 or write to UTC, Leeds City Council, Middleton Ring Road, LS10 4AX.
The first traffic lights in the UK were installed outside the Houses of Parliament in 1868. They resembled railway signals of the time, with semaphore arms and red and green gas lamps for night use.
