Leeds theatre production is family affair

As a child Janet Magson would find herself sitting in the theatre wings while her mother auditioned on stage.

At the age of 12 Janet’s love of the theatre saw her usher actors and actresses onto the stage.

And three decades later life at Guiseley Theatre has certainly become a family affair for her.

Make-up artist and ticket assistant Janet, her mum Midge Booth and her daughter Chloe Thompson are all members of Guiseley Amateur Operatic Society.

Property manager Janet, 42, took over the group’s make-up team three years ago and now they are in the middle of the Society’s latest production Guys and Dolls.

Janet, who lives in Yeadon, Leeds, said: “My mum used to go to rehearsal on a Sunday and she would take me with her.

“When I got to 12 they found a little job for me and I was running up and down the stairs telling people when they were on stage.

“A lot of people don’t actually realise we’re related because we have different surnames.

“It’s nice that we’re all in this.”

Grandma Midge has been involved in the society for 35 years and has been a member of the Amateur’s executive committee for eight years.

And her grandson and Janet’s 14-year-old son Will Thompson has organised the props for the show, which ends its run at the theatre today.

Janet added: “I dragged him along to a few rehearsals and he got plonked somewhere behind the stage and started helping out.”
