Leeds textile firm celebrates stylish Stateside link-up

A Leeds textile firm is bringing a touch of Yorkshire class to academic life in America.

Hainsworth has teamed up with Chicago-based company Harris Made to launch a range of scarves with embroidered seals for US schools, colleges and universities.

Each scarf is handmade with Hainsworth Saxony wool, the same type used for scarves that were originally introduced for Oxford and Cambridge university students in the nineteenth century.

Hainsworth’s sales and marketing director, Diane Simpson, said: “[We have] been helping to dress the smartest minds at leading educational institutions in the UK for over 125 years.

“We’re delighted to be working with Harris Made and helping them establish a collegiate scarf tradition in America.”

Orders for the scarves have already been placed by institutions such as the Northwestern University in Illinois and New Jersey’s prestigious Lawrenceville boarding school.

Emma Harris, Harris Made founder, said: “The wearing of a scarf in collegiate colours is a centuries-old tradition of British universities and schools that demonstrates academic excellence, scholarly pride and is a symbol of community.”

Hainsworth, founded in 1783, employs more than 160 people at its 250,000 sq ft mill in Stanningley.
