Intrepid explorer Ellie Hopkinson has been selected for a national expedition to the Arctic Circle – exactly 30 years after her father went with the same organisation to Greenland.
Ellie, 16, will follow in her father’s footsteps as she sets off for the British Exploring Society expedition to Finnmark in Norway next year.
The brave Leeds teenager is the youngest person to be selected for the group.
During the five-week trip, Ellie will trek across glaciers and study climate change, while facing temperatures that can drop as low as -25 degrees.
Although the family loves outdoor activities, Ellie has never been north of Scotland before.
Ellie’s expedition brings back special memories for her father Jim, who in 1983, aged 17, spent the summer working on scientific activities and explorations just south of the Arctic Circle in eastern Greenland.
Father-of-three Jim said: “I’m very proud Ellie has been selected and know she has the aptitude to tackle this arduous expedition in one of the most remote areas of the earth.
“As it did for me, the time she spends in the arctic will shape the rest of her life.
“Her biggest challenge will be raising the money to go, but she is a determined young person and always seems to achieve what she sets her mind to accomplish.
“There may be risks, but I know that the lifelong benefits of such an inspirational expedition are limitless.
“She will learn so much about perseverance and teamwork.”
He added: “I am still good friends with many people I met on my expedition and they are all helping me to come up with fundraising ideas for Ellie.”
Ellie, who lives in Adel, has to raise around £6,000 to make the trip possible.
She said: “Fundraising will be a balancing act while studying for my A-Levels.
“I am trying to get as much done as possible before school starts again in September and have already held cake sales and am planning a number of fundraising events.”
She added: “Finnmark will be a very challenging environment with harsh conditions that will push me to my limits.
“To ensure I am mentally and physically prepared for the expedition, I will be attempting the national three peaks challenge and will be training hard in all kinds of weather.”
Before tackling the Norway expedition, Ellie will be completing her gold Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
She is also a young leader with the Scout Association.
