Big-hearted Leeds teenager Bethany Hare is embarking on her most ambitious fundraising campaign to date.

Bethany, 14, from Horsforth, has already raised £50,000 for good causes after getting nationwide recognition by starring in a charity video dressed as Charlie Chaplin and singing the hit song Smile.

Now she is calling on people to come up with ideas for fundraising initiatives that can be held through May as part of a campaign called May’ke.

It will culminate in a free day of entertainment and events dubbed A Celebration of Yorkshire, taking place in Leeds’s Millennium Square on May 31.

Funds raised will go towards the Bethany’s Smile charity’s bid to get £300,000 together for a holiday cottage for use by poorly youngsters and their families.

Bethany, from Horsforth, said: “This is my biggest fundraising campaign ever, and I can’t wait to see what ideas Yorkshire people come up with. May’ke is a campaign created by Yorkshire, for people from Yorkshire to get involved in and hopefully to build Smile Cottage – a place for Yorkshire families to use at what must be the most difficult time in their life.

“I can’t believe how much Bethany’s Smile has grown – I didn’t realise how big it could get, and how much of a difference the money we raise can make to families and charities.”

Leeds City Council has backed Bethany by giving her the use of Millennium Square on May 31.

Details of appearances by celebrities and Yorkshire bands on the day are due to be announced shortly.

The event will also feature the final of a singing competition called May’ke Voice of Yorkshire. Bethany wants local companies and organisations to hold in-house contests to find talented vocalists for entry into the competition by April 1.
