Leeds teen at the wheel is world's first person with a BTEC in driving
A Leeds teenager has become the world's first person to be awarded a BTEC in Driving Science.
James Jefferies, 17, a sixth former at The Grammar School at Leeds, was presented with a certificate by Coun Stuart Andrew, Leeds council lead member for transport and travel, at the school on Wednesday.
Alpha to Omega Motoring, a Surrey based firm, runs the course alongside standard driving lessons.
James, who has driven a Toyota Yaris for six months, has already passed the learner and advanced tests. "I'm not a boy racer, but would one day like to own a BMW," he said.
There are just six people undergoing the initiative in Yorkshire.
"If everybody was to do it the roads would be a lot safer," said James. "People say teenagers are the worse on the roads, so hopefully I can help expel that stereotype."
The BTEC, the equivalent of a GCSE, teaches the science behind driver behaviour. Some insurance companies offer 50 per cent discounts to those who achieve the accreditation.
