Leeds super students prove A-level above
A-LEVEL students from across West Yorkshire were today celebrating a bumper crop of top-of-the class grades.
Among the high performing schools was Crawshaw, in Pudsey, Leeds, where students achieved a pass rate of 99 per cent.
On top of that, almost one third of candidates scored one or more 'A' grade.
Director of learning Cath Pheasey said: "These results are richly deserved by our students, and I wish them every success in the future."
Among the strong individual performers were Jake Harris and Phil Tootill, both 18 and studying at Garforth Community College.
Jake sat exams in physics, maths, further maths and chemistry, subjects which look set to take him to Cambridge where he will read natural sciences.
His achievements were all the more marked by the fact he had to complete his chemistry A-level in just one year, when he learned the subject was crucial to his Cambridge entry.
He said: "All the subjects were hard work but I really enjoy them. You couldn't do them if you didn't and I like to be challenged. I had the Cambridge interview last December, I thought it had gone badly but then I got the offer, so I was really pleased."
Phil looks set to take a place at Oxford, to read maths, after completing A-levels in physics, maths, further maths and philosophy.
On top of his A-level work, he sat on a weekly course at the University of Leeds, working on an advanced maths paper.
"The work has been tough at times but it has all been well worth it," he said.
The last academic year saw Garforth College pioneer its partnership with South Leeds High School, which has seen students from the Middleton school study A-levels at Garforth.
Strong performers among the AS students, from South Leeds, were Jessica Wheatley and Stephanie Hunter.
They plan to stay on at Garforth for the second year of their course to convert the AS levels into A-levels.
Linda Richards, Garforth's assistant principal for post 16, said: "All our students have shown great commitment and thoroughly deserve their success. Those from South Leeds have coped very well with the additional challenges they have faced and are making a fantastic contribution to college life."
In Wakefield, Pat Garbutt, the council's member for children and young people, said: "We wish all our students well with their A-level results today and hope they have achieved the results they hoped for."
