Leeds strip club approved despite objections
A FORMER champagne bar in Leeds city centre is to re-open as a strip club despite objections from people living above.
Len's Bar on York Place closed last year and now The Bradbury Executive Trust, the premises licence holder, intends to use the building for a new venture to be called Baby Platinum, a striptease, pole dancing and lap dancing venue.
The scheme cleared a major hurdle when the council's licensing sub-committee agreed the licence could be altered to run from 10am until 6am every day.
It currently operates between 11am and 11pm Monday to Wednesday and on Sunday, 11.30pm on Thursday and 2am Friday and Saturday.
Residents living in flats above the former Len's Bar objected to the application fearing it would lead to increased disturbance.
Matthew Crowther, one of the objectors, told the sub-committee that the proposal to extend the licence until 6am was particularly worrying.
He feared noise from the venue, people arriving and leaving in taxis and customers smoking in the street.
Mr Crowther said: "An extension to 6am is too long. An entire night's sleep could be disturbed."
In a letter of objection, residents Howard Davison and Claire Leather said a lap dancing club was inappropriate in a residential building.
They added: "This is an increasingly residential street with a number of apartment blocks which will all suffer from increased drunkenness and noise into the very early hours of the morning if the alterations to the licence are permitted."
A letter of objection from Zolv.com Ltd, a business based in York Place said: "A licenced premise with all night opening and these activities would have a negative effect on the immediate area and the reputation of the small businesses well established here."
Paddy Whurr, representing The Bradbury Executive Trust, said the applicants were experienced in successfully operating similar establishments in Leeds and Manchester with flats above. He said the building had been sound proofed and a noise limiter would be added to the music system.
Door staff would monitor external activities and ensure no drinks were taken outside.
Mr Whurr said the venue would be aimed at businessmen and added: "It will have less impact on the area than a bar trying to operate as a nightclub."
Mr Len Cohen, who was the licensee of Len's Bar, is not connected to the new venture.
