A snowboarding champ will be cheered on by proud friends and family in Leeds when he takes to the slopes in Sochi at next month’s Winter Olympics.

Dom Harington, 29, who is the son of a Leeds Labour councillor Roger Harington, has been selected to represent Great Britain at this year’s Olympics in Russia.

The former Abbey Grange High school pupil, who grew up in Leeds, is competing in the snowboarding half pipe event.

He is hoping for Olympic glory, after being devastated when missing out on a place at the previous two events in 2010 and 2006.

Dom said: “This was my last attempt, because I just couldn’t face being a back-to-back Olympic failure. And that’s what makes this feel so amazing, like a dream come true.

“If I got in the top 12 that would massively exceed my expectations.

“Huge thanks to all the people in Leeds and Yorkshire who have helped me.”

Dom will travel to Sochi on Sunday as part of Team GB’s seven-strong snowboarding line-up. His half pipe competition is on February 11.

Dom’s dad Coun Harington said: “Myself and his mum Virginia are so proud of him, not least because he has been so disappointed previously on not making the Olympics at the last two events.

“If you’ve played as much sport as I have, and watched as much, especially the Olympics, you find it hard to believe that your son has actually qualified to be there. Whatever cloud is above Cloud Nine, his mum and I are on it.”

DOM’S TOP SNOWBOARDING SUCCESS TIPS:

* You can practice other sports to improve your snowboarding skills, like skateboarding, gymnastics, high diving and trampolining.

* You have to keep fit and in shape to cope with the practice to stay on top of your game. Dom uses the gym a lot to keep fit.

* Try and avoid injuries if at all possible and ensure they are treated correctly..

* Any chance he gets when snow falls he is out searching for hills and enjoys the Yorkshire Dales in winter.
