Leeds skip hire firm fined £18,000 over asbestos
A skip hire business has been fined £18,000 after depositing asbestos in the open at an industrial estate.
Bill Dyson Skip Hire and Waste Management Ltd pleaded guilty at Leeds magistrates' court to two waste handling offences and a further charge of failing to notify the Environment Agency when it received hazardous waste.
The magistrates also ordered the company to pay 1,946 prosecution costs.
The company has a permit from the Environment Agency to keep and treat controlled waste on land at Whitehall Road industrial estate. However, the site was not authorised to accept hazardous waste such as asbestos.
A member of the public in February this year alerted the Environment Agency that there was asbestos on site which was not being stored properly.
The company's operations manager said there was no room for the material in the quarantine area. The roofing was tipped onto the ground because the skip was needed to re-hire.
