A 23-year-old man has appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of 34-year-old Gavin Clarke in Chapeltown last week.

Afzal Arif, 23, of Elford Grove, Harehills, was charged with murder on Monday.

Yesterday he wore blue jeans, a blue checked shirt and a white T-shirt for his first court appearance in the morning in front of Leeds magistrates.

He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth at the brief hearing.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court today.

Four other people have also been charged and were remanded in custody in connection with Mr Clarke’s death.

Brothers Shahid Hussein, 31, Sajad Hussein, 38 and Saeed Hussein, 27, all from the Harrogate Road area of Leeds, are jointly charged with assisting an offender.

Ruqiah Begum, 22, from Meanwood, is also charged with assisting an offender.

The four appeared together at Leeds Magistrates’ Court yesterday afternoon for a separate hour-long hearing.

The three men, all of stocky build, looked straight ahead during the proceedings.

Slender, long-haired Begum cried throughout the hearing.

All four spoke only to confirm their names, addresses and dates of birth before district Judge Christopher Darnton considered bail applications from their lawyers.

The four were remanded to appear before Leeds Crown Court next week on a date to be confirmed.

Begum later burst into tears and waved to friends in the public gallery as she was led away to the cells.

Mr Clarke, a former Leeds City Council caretaker, was blasted in the face with a shotgun on Savile Place, Chapeltown, on Monday, August 8.

The father-of-two, who was an ex-boxer and also ran keep-fit classes, died at Leeds General Infirmary on Friday night.
