Leeds shopper’s shock caterpillar discovery

editorial image

When Leeds resident Jas Plahe bought a bag of spinach from her nearby supermarket she certainly bit off more than she could chew.

The 26-year-old, who lives in Oakwood, discovered three caterpillars hidden in a bag of spinach as she started to prepare lunch on Saturday for her nieces and nephews.

Jas, who bought the packet from Tesco in Roundhay on Friday, said: “I thought there was black soil on the leaves but when I was washing it off I saw two dead caterpillars and a live one.

“I just couldn’t believe it. The salad must have been fresh if one was still alive.”

She took the salad back to the store and was given a refund before she was told that the supermarket’s head office would investigate.
