IT’S the giant robot lovingly crafted from bits of old cars.

Youngsters at the Hunslet Club in Leeds have been tackling a rather unusual project as their coursework comes to an end.

The motor mechanic students have built six-foot-tall Transformers robot from scrap engine parts.

The idea for the task came from Wayne Long, the club’s mechanics tutor, who asked the students if they would like to put their newly learnt skills to a more creative use towards the end of term.

Wayne said: “Some of them really enjoy the Transformers movies so we were inspired to use the spare parts we had lying around to create one of our own.”

The metallic beast came together with ideas flying about as to which pieces could go where and how the parts should be all held together and remain upright.

Wayne added: “We are not sure whether you would call this a piece of engineering or art. If any art galleries in the city want to get in touch with us about displaying it for a while then we might find our answer.”

Tom Warriner, 15, a student at Benton Park School in Rawdon, said: “We’ve been working on this for about seven weeks.

“We looked at each of the engine parts around us and tried to decide which part of the body it could be part of, then had to work out how to fit it all together. It was good fun and a challenge.”

“The hardest part was making it all fit into place so it would look good. There are loads of parts to it, it looks pretty cool.”

The Hunslet Club runs vocational courses for more than 300 14 to 16-year-olds every year. Other subject areas include construction skills and hair and beauty.

The club also runs a vocational education centre for over 300 Year 10 and 11 students to gain qualifications in practical skills.

The club’s youth centre runs dancing, football, boxing, gymnastics, drama and fitness activities for youngsters aged four to 18.
