Leeds schools celebrate A-level success record
STUDENTS across West Yorkshire were celebrating a bumper crop of A-level exam successes today.
Early indications suggested new records for the number of top grades awarded, which every year leads to claims that exams are getting easier.
Among those picking up their results were students at Crawshaw School in Pudsey, Leeds. The school has bounced back from a poor Ofsted report two years ago, and those improvements continued with today's test scores.
Director of learning Sean Preston said that 67 per cent of students had gained grades A to C, a huge jump compared with last year.
"I'm delighted with our results, which show a considerable improvement," he said.
"They are down to the hard work of both students and their teachers over the past year."
At Horsforth School, 53 per cent of grades were either As or Bs – a school record. Head teacher Steve Jex said he was particularly pleased that, as a specialist science college, all students who applied to do medicine at university had gained places.
"A-levels are extremely demanding and our first-class results have shown our students' commitment to study and the expertise of our specialist staff in delivering their courses," he said.
"I am proud of the achievements of all of Year 13."
At Allerton High, Moortown, head teacher Elaine Silson said: "Our young people have been committed over two years to achieving their best possible performances. We are all delighted with the results."
Students at Leeds Girls' High School and Leeds Grammar School – which will merge to become The Grammar School at Leeds – are celebrating major exam success with a combined 93 per cent pass rate at A-Level.
The final group of girls at Leeds Girls' High School achieved a 100per cent pass rate (grades A to E), with 97 per cent passes at grades A to C and 88 per cent at grades A and B.
The boys at Leeds Grammar School achieved a 99.3 per cent pass rate (A to E), including 91per cent at grades A to C, and 76 per cent at A and B.
The combined pass rate at grades A and B is 80.5 per cent.
Out of 206 students, 72 (35 per cent) achieved straight grade As in all their subjects and 22 students achieved four or more A grades.
Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, called for a rethink of the targets regime and post-16 exams.
