PUPILS at a Leeds school performed song and dance routines and served food to 60 guests as a ‘thank you’ to those who supported them during a traumatic period.
Teenagers at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds staged a Come Dine with Me-style event and sang well known songs including You Raise Me Up and Let It Go before guests sat down to a three-course dinner, cooked and served by pupils.
Headteacher Steve Mort thanked guests - including Leeds Council officials - who had supported the school earlier this year when long-serving Spanish teacher Ann Maguire, 61, was stabbed to death in front of pupils.
In a special celebration of success event, the teenage pupils prepared a Spanish-themed meal which included paella and meatballs.
Guests at the school included former Leeds Rhino Keith Senior and Henrietta Duckworth, executive producer of the Yorkshire Festival which celebrated the Yorkshire Grand Depart of the Tour de France.
Past and present pupils, staff and parents and guests from the Roman Catholic diocese were among those who saw song and dance routines by the school’s Glee Club and Defiance troupe.
Pupil Shanese Youngs, 13, who helped serve the food after performing on stage, said: “We were a bit scared of dropping food but it has gone really well and given us confidence.
“We learned the songs and did quite a few lunchtime rehearsals to polish the performance.”
Headteacher Mr Mort said: “Our wonderful students have surpassed all our expectations. They are an absolute credit to themselves, their families and the school.
“This event has been a lovely occasion and a wonderful end to the school year.”
He thanked council officers for their support during the difficult weeks following the death of Mrs Maguire, saying the officers were initially strangers but were now “good friends”.
Several pupils were judged winners of a special Tour de France art competition. Winners included Grace Scanlon, Tia Fenton, Albina Kaminska, Hannah Maw, Uroosa Khan and Kelsey Logan.
The overall winner of the art competition was Katelyn Dyer.
