Leeds school's Ofsted success
A Leeds school, once on the brink of Ofsted special measures, is celebrating a positive assessment from the education watchdog.
Crawshaw School's standards are now considered to be "above average" and inspectors noted that pupils "enjoy lessons and work very hard".
This year's report also concludes there is evidence "good teaching has led to higher standards of attainment at all different key stages" while parents who were interviewed confirmed "a strength of the school is its ability to provide well for individual students".
Headteacher Joanne Ruse was delighted with November's inspection and praised all those who played a part.
She said: "Our support staff ensure each child is supported to reach
his or her potential and I would like to thank students, staff, parents and governors for their commitment. Without their support, such progress would not have been possible. We now look forward to further increasing the proportion of good and outstanding teaching."
This summer saw Crawshaw record its best-ever exam results while the Building For The Future programme has led to extensive refurbishment.
As reported in the YEP, Crawshaw was given a wake-up call in 2006 when Ofsted slammed exam pass rates and gave the school a "notice to improve".
"Super head" Neil Clephan from Roundhay School was brought in to stop the rot, followed by Mrs Ruse.
And subsequent visits saw inspectors congratulate the school for making swift progress and overhauling standards.
The school's success has even seen teachers spend five days teaching at their partner school in Himachal Pradesh, northern India.
As reported in the YEP earlier this year, the trip was the second visit by teachers from the high school.
Two members of staff travelled to Kangra last year on a fact-finding mission.
They worked with the Indian students and shared a number of joint curriculum projects developed by the schools during the past 12 months.
The project is part of the Global School Partnerships programme, which supports teachers and students from the UK to learn about global issues, together with partners in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Praising the school's amazing turnaround back in 2008, Chris Edwards, chief executive of Education Leeds, said: "Under Joanna's inspiring leadership, her fantastic colleagues have the talent and drive to build a truly special school for this community."
