Bookworms are set to delve into hundreds of books in their new Leeds school library.
Pupils at Park Spring Primary in Bramley, Leeds, met author Donna Iliffe-Pollard, who officially opened their new school library yesterday.
Donna, from Leeds, also treated youngsters to a special reading from her recent children’s book The Squizzle, which tells the tale of an alien who dreams of being a chef.
Almost 400 new books have replaced old books in the new facility in a bid to encourage children at the school to take up reading for pleasure.
Lisa Mahoney, literacy co-ordinator at the school, told the YEP: “It’s been in the pipeline as the long-standing vision of the headteacher.”
She added: “The school has been trying to develop the library for a few years.”
Pupils helped to fundraise for the new library, which cost around £4,000, and they raised hundreds of pounds towards their total at a summer fair earlier this year.
The school is also hoping to eventually open the library, which has also been given a makeover with new furniture, to children’s families as well.
During term time, each class at Park Spring will be given a special library slot to allow pupils to explore a variety of different books and authors.
Author Donna, who lives in Leeds, also helped to judge the school’s creative photographic competition during her visit.
Some of the entries included shots of pupils standing in shopping trolleys and hanging on the clothes line – and one child was even photographed inside a basketball hoop.
Headteacher Rachel Horan said: “As a school we see the importance of the children reading for pleasure.
“To develop this further in our school, the school library was in need of revamping so that it showed that, as a school, we valued reading and the library had books that would inspire the children.
“My vision is for the library to be at the heart of the school community to be used by pupils, parents and staff.
“The staff and the Friends of Park Spring have worked extremely hard to achieve the library we have today, including raising over £1,700 through the school’s summer fair to buy books that will excite the children to read.”
