Leeds school for ‘survivors’ gets ‘good’ Ofsted

A LEEDS school which is striving to support youngsters for whom the mainstream education system is not working, has received a ‘good’ Ofsted report following an inspection.

And behaviour and safety at Eden Park Academy in Beeston, which has a small number of pupils, was found to be ‘outstanding’.

All other areas including teaching, leadership and achievement of pupils, were classed as ‘good’ with an overall ‘good’ result.

Kerry Maynard, head of education at Eden Park Academy said: “We are extremely happy with the schools outcome and more so the recognition for all the hard work teachers, learning support and care staff have put in since opening.

“The pupils who attend Eden Park have been excluded from a range of other educational provisions and had many negative experiences within the school system. It is our mission to ensure that “every pupil achieves” and that we find something in each young person that offers them hope and determination to succeed and develop as a person.

“It is an independent school for pupils unable to cope in mainstream education. All pupils have behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. Most are looked after by social services.”

Eden Park is a day special school at Barkly Road, which opened in September 2013 to provide coeducational, full-time education for students in the

age range 11 to 16 years who experience behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. A very small number of students has a statement of special educational needs.

Many youngsters are referred from other schools after being excluded.

The report stated: “Students make rapid progress with their learning across a range of subjects, including English and mathematics.

“The quality of teaching is good. Teachers have a good understanding of how to plan activities and tasks which enable all students to learn effectively and make progress.

“Students’ behaviour and attitudes to learning are outstanding. They are eager to take an active part in learning and they appreciate the opportunities provided by the school.”
