Coroner's officer Anthony Lancaster said Mr Garnham, of Fryston Road, Airedale, Castleford, was believed to have mounted the escalator's rail and tried to slide down. He said: "He was seen to sit astride the handrail and begin to slide down it before he fell off." He is believed to have fallen 20 feet on to a concrete floor.

Mr Garnham was taken to Pontefract General Infirmary, by ambulance and transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where he died later that day.

A provisional post-mortem gave a cause of death as head injuries. West Yorkshire Coroner David Hinchcliff adjourned the inquest pending the outcome of further reports.
