Leeds rocker revs up

Rock musician Steve Jeffries struck an odd note with his neighbours when he decided to record a CD of classic tracks.

The performer and singer decided to capture the authentic sound of real engine revs for a cover version of the Steppenwolf anthem Born To Be Wild – featured on the soundtrack of cult 1969 film Easy Rider.

But his dedication to musical duty caused some odd looks from passers-by as he got down to recording on the street outside his home in Shadwell, Leeds.

He said: "I got my neighbour to rev up my Mazda engine as loud as it would go while I crouched right behind the exhaust. It was the only way to get the exact sound on my multi-track recorder as it's very small.

"The whole thing only lasted a few minutes but unfortunately I could taste the fumes all day long. And of course the neighbours wondered what on earth was going on."

It includes classic 1960s songs like Mustang Sally and Bad Moon Rising as well as slower ballads and some of Steve's own compositions.

His musical repertoire includes electric and acoustic guitar, drums and bass.

He said: "I know you can do a lot these days with computers but I don't

even have one at home, though I got someone to do a website for me because it helps promote my gigs and records. I believe in proper instruments and real sounds."

A regular fixture on the musical circuit in Yorkshire and Lancashire, Steve also performs on cruise ships. His pride and joy is his Fender Telecaster guitar, a brand made famous by his hero Bruce Springsteen.

When not performing solo, Steve has played worked with the likes of X Factor winner Steve Brookstein and singer Lisa Scott-Lee, formerly of Steps.
