Leeds Rhinos star’s baby joy as Macy arrives early

Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow believed nothing could beat winning a Grand Final – until his daughter Macy was born this week.

Burrow, man of the match for Rhinos in last October’s Super League triumph over St Helens, described 6lb Macy as his “little princess”.

And after watching wife Lindsey give birth on Wednesday morning, Burrow admitted rugby players aren’t quite as tough as he once thought they were.

Macy, the couple’s first child, surprised Rob and Lindsey by arriving almost three weeks early – on the morning he should have been flying with his team-mates to a pre-season training camp in Cyprus.

“I absolutely love it,” Burrow said of fatherhood.

“When I look at this little princess, it is all worth while.

“I thought winning a Grand Final was the best, but not in comparison to this bundle of happiness. No trophy can compare with this.”

Burrow conceded he is “not the household sort”, but he said: “I will have a dig. I am doing my best, I’ve been changing nappies and feeding her and doing as much as I can.

“I am 29 and I am ready for it. I have been looking forward to it for a while. My life’s changed, the computer games will stop now, but I am really enjoying it – she is perfect.”

Burrow regarded rugby as a tough occupation until watching Lindsey’s labour.

He said: “She’s fine, but she didn’t have any pain relief. She was a champion. We go out and work hard at rugby, but to go through what women have to go through – that is really tough!”

The baby was born at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, and the couple thanked staff there for their care and attention.

She had had been due two days before Burrow’s testimonial game against Featherstone Rovers, at Headingley Carnegie on January 20.

“She will be the mascot for the game,” he revealed. “I will carry her on to the pitch with me before the match.”

No decision has yet been made on whether Burrow will join his team-mates in Cyprus for the final days of their training camp.
