Leeds receives £2.4m marketing boost
THE profile of Leeds is to be raised even further, thanks to a funding boost of £2.4 million, over the next three years.
Marketing Leeds has been awarded an additional 2.4 million in funding from Yorkshire Forward to continue its mission raising the profile of Leeds as a vibrant, dynamic and internationally competitive city.
This cash injection, with additional funding from Leeds City Council and the private sector, will enable Marketing Leeds to build on its successful activity programme delivered to date and deliver a truly world class marketing plan over the next three years.
Deborah Green, chief executive of Marketing Leeds, said: "We are not complacent. We are continuously improving, making sustainable and adding value to what we are doing, particularly in the wider city region.
"Its vital we continue to work with other agencies and work together as one team to make Leeds the best it can possibly be."
She said Leeds was broimming with vitality and its was an important time for the city, particularly in recent cash strapped times, which has seen the credit crunch hit many businesses and individuals."
Last year Leeds City Council gave 200,000 and this year 400,000 towards Marketing Leeds and the private sector has given 400,000 this year.
The 2009-2012 plan will see Marketing Leeds continue to follow its effective strategy of acting as the city's catalyst – working with the region's tourism agency, Welcome to Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Tourism Partnership, to promote the city as a whole, with the aim of delivering real economic impact and the creation of wealth for the region.
As part of the plan, Marketing Leeds will continue to build the city's unique 'Leeds Live it Love it' brand, by encouraging the public and private sectors to leverage the brand as part of their own marketing activities.
This brand has given Leeds a strong identity at a national and international level, with the highly successful website www.leedsliveitloveit.com attracting over 200,000 unique users per month.
Ms Green said the highly successful Leeds in Milan event, where more than 170 delegates from business, the city council and the arts travelled to Italy for a week had attracted more than 230,000 euros worth of editorial coverage in the Italian media, further spreading the word about Leeds.
Major international platform events will form a key part of the programme to give the city its voice on a national and international stage, with the US, Hong Kong and a shortlist of European cities earmarked for such visits.
Ms Green added: "Thanks to the support we've received to date, we've been able to deliver an outstanding programme of activities which have made a real impact on the business community within the city.
"This continued support, coupled with the additional funding from Yorkshire Forward, will enable us to deliver a truly world class marketing plan for Leeds and give the city its voice at a national and international level."
Andrew Carter, Chair of the Leeds City Region board: "Marketing Leeds has a pivotal role in helping Leeds and the wider area realise its vision. The recent announcement to award the Leeds City Region additional powers will enable us to create a more competitive region, which we need Marketing Leeds to help promote at a national and international level."
