A VIOLENT rapist has been given a 12 year sentence after subjecting a woman an horrific sex attack at his home in Leeds.

A court heard Rick Cooke has an “entrenched discriminatory attitude” and is controlling towards women.

Cooke locked his victim in his home over night and subjected her to an attack in which he throttled her before punching, slapping and kicking her.

The 44-year-old then threatened to kill the woman before raping her the next day.

Cooke, of Edgware Place, Harehills, Leeds, then forced his victim to get a bath in a bid to destroy forensic evidence.

He was found guilty of rape and assault occasioning actual bodily harm after a trial at Leeds Crown Court. Cooke has previous convictions for violence against women.

Recorder Tim Roberts, QC, told Cooke he must serve nine years in prison followed by an extended licence period of three years. He said: “You were confident that no one would believe her if she reported crimes against her. You were wrong about that. He added: “You appear to me to have an entrenched discriminatory attitude towards women. You try to control them with threats, intimidation and violence.”

Det Chief Insp Mark Griffin, of Leeds District Safeguarding Unit, said: “Cooke is a controlling individual with a history of violence against women. He put the victim through a horrendous ordeal leaving her badly traumatised. We hope the fact that he has now had to face the consequences of his actions will provide some source of comfort to her. Offences of this nature are always thoroughly investigated and we have specially trained officers who can support victims throughout that process.”
