Leeds pupils give teachers a lesson in fire safety

Pupils have turned the tables on their teachers – by handing out lessons of their own.

Youngsters from Guiseley School Technology College have produced a DVD which instructs education staff on how to operate a vital piece of new safety equipment.

Across Leeds, 22 schools are having their fire alarm systems upgraded. The new DVD will show teachers and support staff how to work the new alarms and what to do in the event of an emergency.

The students are members of the school's film society, Pupil Power Productions, and came up with two short films: one which provides general fire safety advice and one which outlines how to use the fire alarm.

Paul Morrisey, head teacher at Guiseley School Technology College, said: "This project is a perfect illustration of the hard work, enthusiasm and effort that many members of our school community display both in school and in the wider community. Projects such as this serve to build important links between the school and the world of work, and I am sure the pupils and sixth formers involved have gained a lot of insight in to the professional workplace as a result."

Chris Edwards, chief executive of Education Leeds, said: "This has been an excellent opportunity for the pupils to gain experience producing a professional DVD which will be distributed to a number of schools across Leeds."

The youngsters who took part were rewarded with a laptop for their school – donated by electrical sub-contractors Vallectric Ltd which has been involved in the alarms project. They were also presented with certificates and given a tour of the Strategic Design Alliance offices, which is in charge of the fire alarm scheme on behalf of Education Leeds.
