Leeds postman faces jail after hiding 27,000 items

A POSTMAN from Leeds faces jail after admitting hiding more than 27,000 packages and stealing a mailbag.

Craig Parker, 29, of Clayton Drive, Middleton, pleaded guilty to delaying the delivery of 27,200 postal packets and stealing a mailbag containing 425 items between September 24, 2007 and March 19, 2008.

Judge Paul Hoffman told Parker at the Leeds Crown Court hearing: "Custody is pretty much inevitable."

The court heard Parker has one previous conviction for being drunk and disorderly.

Parker was granted conditional bail and must live and sleep at his home address until he is sentenced next month.

Parker had previously appeared at court in August.

Parker is not the first postal worker in Yorkshire to be caught stealing in recent years.

In July 2006 postman Rodger Parkinson, 49, was jailed for nine months after police found one of the biggest hauls of undelivered mail ever recovered stashed at his South Yorkshire home.

In March last year delivery driver Mark Butler, 39, of Brackendale Road, Wakefield, stashed away a postal hoard of almost 4,000 letters over five years.

He was locked up for nine months.

In July last year postman Kevin Carter, 48, was caught in a Royal Mail "sting" and jailed for nine months after stealing thousands of greetings cards in Harrogate.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said the company was not willing to comment until after Parker had been sentenced. However, she confirmed that Parker was no longer employed by the company.
