Leeds party thug left victim in coma
Luke Brown.
A violent thug left a young man with permanent brain injuries after repeatedly kicking him in the head in a drunken attack.
Trainee fitness instructor Luke Brown, 20, was detained indefinitely after a judge heard his 21-year-old victim was left in a coma and will never recover from the horrific assault.
Leeds Crown court heard the incident happened on October 15 last year after a row at a party at Raynville Grange, Bramley.
Brown had his friend had been drinking with others at the property and left in the early hours of the morning.
They returned in a taxi after his friend received a threatening phone call. His friend began fighting with the owner of the property.
Shamaila Qureshi, prosecuting, said Brown then got out of the taxi and attacked another man, punching him to the floor and then kicking him in the head six or seven times.
The victim was taken to hospital suffering bleeding to the brain and had to be induced into a coma to prevent his condition worsening.
Miss Qureshi said the victim will never fully recover from his injuries and his life expectancy could be reduced. He suffers from emotional and behavioural problems and can only walk short distances.
After his arrest Brown said he had behaved stupidly after drinking Bacardi and three litres of vodka between himself and four others.
He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The court heard he has previous convictions for robbery and violence.
At the time of the offence he had been released from a young offenders’ institution on licence for causing grievous bodily harm.
James Keeley, for Brown, said: “He is sickened, he is ashamed, he is extremely remorseful. What he did will remain with him for the rest of his life. He wishes he could turn back the clock.”
Mr Keeley described his client as an intelligent young man but said had a problem with binge-drinking.
Judge Sally Cahill ordered Brown to be detained in custody indefinitely after reading a probation service report which described him as posing a significant risk to members of the public in the future.
He must serve a minimum of five before he can apply to the parole board for release.
