A team of dedicated Yorkshire Evening Post staff has helped turn sales of papers into thousands of pounds for a Leeds cancer centre.

Hospital staff, visitors and patients in the city have contributed to the bumper £11,026 raised for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre last year.

The YEP’s product marketing team masterminded the fundraising, which comes from sales of papers at Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s Hospital. The six-strong team visits clinics in the hospitals every day and 8p from the sale of each copy is donated to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal.

Product marketing co-ordinator Diane Martin said: “It’s a fabulous amount and I am absolutely delighted.

“The team work so hard and it is such a good cause.”

It’s also a cause especially important to Evening Post readers who during 2007 and 2008 helped raise £3m for the appeal through a campaign in the paper.

The £10m Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal supports the St James’s Institute of Oncology at the hospital’s Bexley Wing.

It provides specialist medical equipment, home comforts for patients, arts and garden projects around the building and funds research, especially through two state-of-the-art radiotherapy machines which the YEP fundraising helped to pay for.

Diane added that the product marketing team had collected around £50,000 for
the appeal over the past five years.

In addition to the Leeds fundraising, donations are also made from papers sold at Dewsbury and District Hospital by the team.

Last year they raised almost £2,000 for the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust charity.
