Leeds NSPCC children’s centre set to undergo makeover

An NSPCC children’s centre in Leeds, which locals feared might close amid wider changes in its parent charity, will undergo a major refurbishment with expanded facilities.
The charity has announced a makeover of its Stanningley Road base in Bramley.
The work, including new counselling rooms, will start at the end of the year, with the expanded facilities launched early next year.
Campaigners including Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves, pictured, have lobbied to keep the service in Bramley.
Gordon Ratcliffe, the NSPCC regional head for Yorkshire, said: “We are pleased to be maintaining and strengthening the NSPCC’s presence in Leeds, where we will be developing new and innovative services to help the most vulnerable children.
“Child protection is everyone’s responsibility and we are pleased to have the support of key leaders and politicians in Leeds to help us develop our work.”
Miss Reeves added: “I am delighted about the expansion of the NSPCC facility in Bramley. It is exciting that pioneering services that help and support the most vulnerable children in our society will be in Bramley.”
Concerns about NSPCC’s Leeds services were raised when plans were announced to close the Yorkshire base of ChildLine – which is run by the charity – and transfer young people’s calls to a new internet-based service.
Calls currently go through to volunteers in a building in The Calls area of Leeds city centre.
Staff will now advise young people through a website and volunteers will do counselling shifts at the NSPCC’s main Leeds headquarters on Albion Street.
