Leeds MP’s fears for families hit hard by budget cuts

A Leeds MP fears cash-strapped families will bear the brunt of central government cuts.

Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves said people in some of the city’s most deprived areas will face ‘real hardship’ when Chancellor George Osbourne announces the budget later this month.

Rachel spoke about her concerns as she visited St George’s Crypt’s cafe in Armley.

The charity has recently opened a food bank at the site to provide goods to people and families who are struggling. Labour politician Rachel, who is also Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said: “It’s been extremely difficult for people in my area.

“There are lots of problems with poverty and frankly, it is a disgrace that in 2013, people are having to rely on charity to feed themselves and their families.

“I know many people are going to face real hardship.”

The council recently announced plans to increase council house rents and scrap school uniform grants to help save £55m due to central Government cuts.

She added:“The work of the Crypt and the growth of food banks is helping to ease these challenges in people’s lives.”

Rachel’s visit to the Crypt’s cafe was her last job before she goes on maternity leave.

She added: “I’m really excited about starting a family but it’s important that constituents get the support and help they need.” Rachel’s offices in Leeds and London will continue to deal with enquiries and to hold advice surgeries and she will be back working full time in September.
