Leeds MP opposes tuition fee hike
LEEDS MP Colin Burgon has given his support to a campaign opposing any increase in university tuition fees in the next parliament.
Mr Burgon (Lab, Elmet) signed up to the campaign at a National Union of Students (NUS) event at Westminster.
The Government recently announced the start of a review of university funding, which will look at the impact of 2004's introduction of 3,000 fees and will report after the next General Election.
Mr Burgon said: "I was pleased to support the campaign because I am totally opposed to a further increase of the financial burden on students and the introduction of marketisation to Higher Education."
NUS President Wes Streeting said: "NUS believes that a university education should be free at the point of use, with graduates giving back to the system according to how much they earn.
"This would give universities double the amount of funding they currently receive, while allowing the children of poorer families to go to university without the fear of debt.
"It would also prevent the emergence of a market in higher education, where only the rich could afford to attend our most prestigious universities."
