Leeds Met University students treated to a slice of movie magic

Skyfall.

Skyfall.

The sound of Hollywood came to Leeds when music students enjoyed workshops with experts who have worked on movie blockbusters including Casino Royale and Harry Potter.

The lucky Leeds Metropolitan University students were also treated to guest talks by some of the top names in the world of sound editing who have worked with global pop stars including Pink Floyd, Queen and Michael Jackson.

The impressive list of guest speakers included Eddy Joseph, one of the most respected supervising sound editors in the world, who has worked on projects including Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Another guest speaker was Mike Dowson, who until recently was the chief re-recording mixer at Pinewood Shepperton Studios, has worked on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, parts one and two, My Week with Marilyn and Alien Vs Predator.

They were joined by Dennis Weinreich, retired managing director for post-production at Pinewood Shepperton Studios and formerly a music engineer and producer, working with artists such as Queen, Jeff Beck, Supertramp and Michael Jackson.

The trio gave students an overview to working in audio post-production, described the industry roles available and their views on how technology is changing the industry.

Students were also shown samples of the experts’ work, with explanations of how they had been put together.

The sessions, for those studying courses in Music Technology and Production and students in the Northern Film School, were organised by course leader Steve Parker to support a group project in which the students recreate the soundtrack – both music and sound effects – for a film of their choice.

Steve said: “These industry links are important to our students as they focus on up-to-date practice, giving them the opportunity to develop the employability skills necessary in the changing landscape of employment.”

He added: “Our partnerships allow for important networking opportunities that have in the past led to employment.”
