Leeds man's marathon effort to help nephew
Sebastian White's heart condition means he can't do much exercise – so his devoted uncle is getting his running shoes on instead.
Barry White, of Pudsey, will run the Flora London Marathon on April 13 for two charities – the Children's Heart Surgery Fund at Leeds General Infirmary, and Heartbeat Northern Ireland, which fund raises for the Clark Clinic in Belfast where Sebastian has been treated.
The 10-year-old was diagnosed with severe congenital heart disease at just four days old. He had his first operation five days later, followed by another two major heart operations.
He needs regular check-ups and has to avoid intense physical activity over a prolonged period.
Barry, who is originally from Coleraine, Northern Ireland, is hoping to raise at least 3,000 to split between the two organisations – one of which helped save Sebastian's life and the other which helps youngsters like him. The 35-year-old said: "People are paying to see me suffer and that's as it should be."
He added: "Having been to visit Sharon Cheng and her team at the LGI, I am so impressed by their commitment to help those young children in Yorkshire whose early years have been made more difficult by heart disease."
